It seems no matter how careful you are accidents and spills happen. Whether you spill a glass of red wine or your pet didn’t make it outside to do their business on time, sooner or later you will have to clean up a mess, but once you do, you would assume it was all behind you. That is until the spot comes back. While it is frustrating, there are a couple of reasons this happens.
When there is a spill or a pet accident, there is typically a large volume of liquid involved in the spill. That means that it seeps into the carpet and the backing. When you clean up the spill you typically only clean the pile of the carpet. That leaves all the liquid in the backing still there. Once the carpet pile dries, the liquid hiding in the backing comes back up into the pile, and the spot returns.
The second reason for spots returning is that some sort of sticky residue has remained after you have cleaned your carpet. This residue can be from the original spill itself or from the cleaning product you used to remove the spill.
Many over-the-counter carpet cleaners can leave a residue. Once this happens, it will attract dirt and hair which will then cause the spot to return. Other items that can cause a residue in your carpets include body lotions, duct tape, and body oils. It can be difficult to remove this residue without a professional carpet cleaning.
