It’s just your luck. The day before a big family event you or someone else spills something on your carpet. There isn’t time to have it professionally cleaned before the big day, so what do you do? Here are a couple of options to hold you over until you can get a professional carpet cleaner to come to your home.
Dark Stains or Spots
If the stain or spot is a surface stain, then you might be able to lift some or all of the stain with a little warm soapy water. Be sure that the cloth you use is damp but not too wet. You don’t want to get your carpets overly wet as the moisture can cause more damage.
Also, be sure you blot the spot. You don’t want to rub it as that will make the stain worse and damage your carpet.
Stains on a Light Carpet
If you have a light color carpet and you can’t get the stain to come up, then there is a short-term solution that might help, and that’s talcum powder. Just sprinkle enough on the carpet to cover the stain. This won’t last long, of course, but it might get you through the event without too much embarrassment.
Cover it Up
Often times a stain happens right next to a piece of furniture. That’s due to the fact that people set their glasses and food plates on furniture. If the spill is close to a piece of furniture, you can simply move the furniture to cover the spot.
This doesn’t get rid of the spot, but at least no one will see it until you can have it cleaned.
Of course, if the spot is in the middle of the room, that can be more difficult. However, if you have an area rug that you can bring from another room that fits into the decor of the room with the stained carpet, this can be a great temporary solution.
