It can seem that no matter how hard you try to keep your carpets clean, someone ends up spilling wine on it and usually in the worst place possible. Even so, it is possible to keep your carpets looking good with a few practical tips on how to clean up wine stains correctly.
From Club Soda to Vinegar and Beyond
Most likely you have heard whispers about club soda being able to clean up certain stains such as wine. It can certainly do so if you use the club soda properly. If someone does drop something on the carpet, don’t wait. Take care of the stain immediately.
You can first try to blot the area with a cloth that has been wet down with club soda. If you find that doesn’t quick do the trick, then you’ll have to move on to white vinegar. Use equal parts of vinegar and water and spray it on the stain. Then let it sit for fifteen minutes. Press a clean sponge on the stain to pull up the vinegar mixture and the stain. You may need to repeat this a few times.
When all of the stains have been removed, use warm water to rinse the spot where the stains had been. Then fluff the carpet fibers back up using your hand.
Now that the stain is gone, you need to remove the water left in the carpet. Place some paper towels, preferably white ones, down and then put something heavy on them such as a large book. Leave it there until the carpet is dry. This can take up to a day.
